ABOUT GERR MARINE
Gerr Marine probably draws a wider assortment of differing types of boats than any other design office. Projects have ranged from a 28-pound, 10-foot, FRP, Wee-Lassie canoe (that disassembles into three pieces, which nest inside each other-in just 90 seconds) to 440-foot sail-assisted cruise ships, to consulting work on crew accommodations in US nuclear attack submarines. We design power and sail; yacht and commercial; wood, FRP/composite, aluminum, and steel; multihull and monohull. Styling runs the gamut from gaff riggers and voyaging trawler yachts, to modern express cruisers, patrol boats, BOC racers, and sailing catamarans. You can see many of these boats in the drawings and photos on this web site.
All this diversity leads to an invaluable cross-fertilization of ideas. Approaches or techniques traditionally used on one type of boat, will often prove surprisingly effective-properly applied-to very different craft, indeed. Such was the case during the design of the tunnel-drive cruiser Summer Kyle, and of the aluminum voyagers Ironheart and Magic Moment.
Some of the vessels on this site are available as fully detailed construction plans (as stock plans). Other designs were for production builders, and some have only progressed as far as detailed conceptuals. Whatever the case, if you find a design that looks right to you, just drop us a line or give us a call. Of course, with so much diversity and so many possibilities, you may well want us to draw up a new design from scratch. Unless you're lucky enough to find exactly what you want in stock plans, this is a very sensible option for boats over 40 feet, or so.
The cost of a new design is roughly 8 percent of the cost of the finished boat. This is less than you'd pay a broker when purchasing or selling a boat, and it's money well spent to get exactly what you want and need. Generally, we have delivered new custom-designed boats for prices comparable to a production boat of the same size, type, and quality-including the cost of design.
All the designs on this site started as a phone call or a letter from someone who was serious about bringing their new boat to life. Call or write, or-if you're going to be passing through New York City-make an appointment to stop by our office, and we can discuss your project in detail.
